A: try ebay or better CRAIGSLIST

Q: What is the difference between the two models of 1964 El Camino?
Other than motor size, what is the difference between the two models of the 1964 El Camino? One is listed as a “2-door sedan pickup, regular”, and the other is listed as a “2-door sedan pickup, custom deluxe”. Is there a difference in the exterior trim or interior, or some other things? Where can I find photos of the two?

A: trim line is more on on the latter

Q: How can I keep mice from making my El Camino their home?
I have an old Chevrolet El Camino that does not get driven very much. Mice have made their home under the dashboard. I have trapped 2 of them, but more will move in :( Is there something that will keep them out?

A: Peppermint Oil. Take a cotton pad, or cotton balls and soak them in Peppermint Oil and put them in the car, under the dash where you can reach, or set them in a small tuna can or something on the floor. It will keep mice and rats out, and unlike other things such as mothballs which do it also, it will not smell bad like the mothballs. Change your cotton balls every so often so that it maintains the smell in there. I have lived in the country for over 35 years and we have mice and pack rats, and they love to chew on the electrical wires under the dash board. This will keep them out. I do it in my Mobile Home Also.
I have a ‘66 and an ‘83 El Camino, and it works on them. I very seldom drive them, usually drive one of my other cars. Single and Car Poor. 5 vehicles. LOL You can get Peppermint Oil in some drugstores, but it is cheaper to look it up on the Internet and order it there in a larger bottle.

Q: How Can I Find Out If My 1984 El Camino Is A True Super Sport?
My brother recently purchased a 1984 El Camino and i want to find out how can i tell if its a true super sport. It has a decal in the back that says super sport but it just looks like a decal someone just put there.

A: That’s easy.

The only way to tell a true 4th Generation (1983 – 1988) Monte Carlo SS from a non-SS by the VIN alone is to look at the 8th digit of the VIN. This is the Engine Code. In 1983, that digit MUST be a ‘7′ for the car to be a true SS. For 1984 through 1988 models, the 8th digit MUST be a ‘G’. This signifies the car came with the L69, 305ci, 5.0L High Output V8 engine. SSs came with no other engine. Period.

My brother recently purchased a 1984 El Camino and i want to find out how can i tell if its a true super sport. It has a decal in the back that says super sport but it just looks like a decal someone just put there.

A: The SS has a different front end on it with a rubber, molded in bumper, bucket seats, console etc.. If it has all this, it’s probably legit, but google el camino to see if there are any clubs out there, and you will be able to find the info you need.

Q: How should I start off on fixing up my El Camino?
It’s been sitting out in the back yard for about 8 or 9 years now and I believe it’s time to fix it up. To be honest I know little about cars in general but I’m good at repairing things. Now my dad knows a whole hell of a lot about cars and will give me tips on the car but he said he wants nothing to do with it. Though I was wondering if someone could give me a quick run down and things I need to do in order to repair this thing.

A couple things you should know is that I’m just replacing the entire engine and tires. So there is no need for any help there. Oh and could anyone give me a guesstimate of how much a new engine would cost.
Here’s a few pics of the El Camino:

Thanks for any help.

A: dont forget to crawl under the back & see how badly its rusted where your suspension fastens to the frame/body.
if its rusted through there dont waste any money on it just get another one & use the one you have for parts.

Q: I want to change out the headlights in my 1968 El Camino to more modern headlights, any suggestions?
Ok, here’s the deal. I have a 1968 chevy El Camino with the standard old headlights. They look retro and, all but I cant see to the end of the block at night. What I want is a headlight(high beam and low beam) that will fit in the existing bezel and be as bright as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A: Check with most any auto parts store. They carry many kinds of replacement lights and can get you as bright as you can afford.

Q: How much would it cost to get a transmission replaced of an El Camino?
I have a 1986 El Camino and the transmission just died on it =(. how much would it be to take it somewhere to get it taken out, rebuilt, and put back in? Or do you have any cheaper/better suggestions?

A: There are no “cheaper/better suggestions” I assume you have a 350 turbo(non-overdrive) and this is at least among the cheapest to have rebuilt.
I have a friend that runs a transmission shop and rebuilds for me at home. The cost there has certainly increased over the years. At a point I could get a 350 rebuilt with a torque converter(me providing labor) for $125.00, ex-change. Those days are long gone.
The suggestion is to shop around. Get prices to include warranty and towing. Most companies will provide towing free considering the price will be high.
“Cheaper” would be a used one but this is not a good idea. Someone else’s problems rarely fix yours.

Q: Diagram for installing a carpet in 1983 El camino?
It’s a 1983 El Camino.
Ordered a new kit and not to sure on how to install it all.

If anyone could point me to a link that will show me some sort of diagram or step by step that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.
Went to the site.

El Camino’s aren’t a model that they seem to support.

A: FIRST REMOVE THE STEP PLATES ON EACH DOOR .USUALLY THREE TO FOUR SCREWS. REMOVE THE SEATS SHOULD BE FOUR BOLTS IF BENCH OR FOUR BOLTS FOR EACH BUCKET. IF POWER DISCONNECT MALE FEMALE PLUG UNDER SEATS. IF SHIFTER IS IN A CON-SOL REMOVE STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN CON-SOL. THERE ARE TWO SCREWS THAT HOLD THIS IN . YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CON-SOL TO THE FLOOR WITH THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT REMOVED LIFT IT UP /OVER THE SHIFT LEVER. THE NEXT AREA IS WHERE THE CARPET TUCKS UP UNDER THE PANELS IN FRONT OF THE PEDALS AND UNDER THE AC /HEATER DUCTS ON THE HUMP AND HIGH ON THE INTERIOR FIRE WALL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE.. THE PANELS ON EACH SIDE ARE USUALLY HELD BY SCREWS. AT THAT POINT PULL THE CARPET BACK AND LIFT UP. IT MAY BE STUCK TO THE OLD MATTING SO SOME EFFORT MAY BE REQUIRED.INSTALLATION IS A REVERSAL OF THE ABOVE. YOU MAY WANT TO GET SOME 3-M 8080 ADHESIVE SPRAY TO GET THE NEW CARPET TO LAY INTO THE NOOKS AND CORNERS. GOOD LUCK . THIS IS NOT AN EASY JOB.

Q: What color should I paint my 81 El Camino?
Just looking for suggestions on what color or colors to paint my 1981 El Camino. I was thinking all black with purple stripes or white stripes. The interior is blue but the bench seat is purplish. Right now it is all white with a blue pinstripe sticker along the side. The bed is black and I don’t really want to change that.

A: your should probably make it match the interior or it will look wierd so i would go with ROYAL BLUE W/ BLACK STRIPES OR WHITE STRIPES

Q: What muffler would sound best on my 79 el camino?
Its a 79 el camino with a 305 and single 2.5” exhaust pipe. Where I live there aren’t emmissions test so I will probably take the catalytic converter out as well. I’m looking for something with a real deep tone and not something too loud, maybe like a thrush of flomaster? And if flowmaster what series should I go with? Any feedback would be appreciated.

A: steel welded turbo

Q: What makes a 1973 el camino an SS. Also what would a 1973 el camino with a 454 be considered a Muscle?
I know this car would be bad on gas but this is a project car that will not be a daily driver. Just would like to know would a 1973 El Camino with a 454 be a good building block for a super fast car. (Has automatic transmission.)

A: 73 is the first year of that body, my 77 is the last. Mine is a basically stock 350 that will roast both the rear tires even with a limited slip. It rides and drives like a Caddy, but tops out a little over 125. Traction is an issue, but I’ve got a set of 14″ X 28″ slicks (they do fit the stock wheel wells) for mine when I want to play at the strip. It’s a fun vehicle to own, and is my daily driver.

Q: Does anyone know if the seat On a Chevrolet El Camino can be moved forward?
I am planning to buy an el camino, but the only time I drove one i had trouble reaching the pedals ( im 5′3), so i just want to know if the seat(s) can be moved closer so i can reach the pedals more comfortably.

A: Yes! Ofcourse they can.

Q: How do I make my 1982 Chevy El Camino engine stop burning so much Oil?
I just got this El Camino and the smoke coming out of the exhaust is black That means that it is “Eating Oil” But why wouldn’t it. It is an old engine. But anyways can you help me and give me your opinion on a diagnose on the engine, and what I would have to do to restore the engine to an order of drive-able.
Thank you Very Much

A: you say it’s not using any oil but it’s blowing black smoke, if it’s carbureated it’s running way to rich on gas, you need to think about a new carb or getting it rebuilt.

Q: What is the wiring setup for a 1980 El Camino distributor?
I have a 1980 El Camino that I’m working on and i would like to know the wiring for the distributor, i need to know what wires go to what cylinders.
